1. What animals live in the sea? Discuss and show pictures.
* Graph favorites
2. How do fish breathe?
* Discuss gills
3. What do the fish eat?
* Discuss things found in the water for fish to eat (plants, other fish, etc).
4. What are the differences in salt and fresh water?
Make a salt water solution and dye it with food coloring. Fill the jar half full of salt solution and then slowly pour plain tap water on top of the solution. The salt water will stay at the bottom of the solution because it is heavier. Release a couple of small brine shrimp (check a pet store) and a goldfish into the solution. The shrimp will go to the seawater bottom while the goldfish will stay at the top (freshwater).
5. What are ways to be safe around water and in the sunshine?
6. Elaborate on the animals mentioned in number one.
1. Create 3D sea animals using play dough, toothpicks, goggly eyes, etc..
2. Have cut outs of sea animals and fresh water animals sort them in groups.
3. Sort Sea shells (color, size, weight)
4. Sort animals (sea animals with pets, zoo, or jungle animals)
5. Make sea creatures.
Octopus out of a paper plate folded in half with streamers and goggly eyes.

2. Under the Sea
Down under the sea,
Where the dolphins swim free,
And the sand and the sea grasses sway,
Where the starfish shine bright,
And the dog fish don’t bite,
I ride my seahorse all day.
Down under the sea,
Where the whales sing and dive deep,
We chase and rope sharks,
Until it gets dark,
When the waves gently rock us to sleep.
Down under the sea,
My seahorse takes me,
On a ride through coral and caves.
We round up fish there,
Rescue mermaids so fair,
My seahorse and I are quite brave!
(repeat chorus)
3. Down Under The Sea (Tune: Home on the Range)
Down under the sea,
Where the dolphins swim free,
And the sand and the sea grasses sway,
Where the starfish shine bright,
And the dog fish don’t bite,
I ride my seahorse all day.
Down under the sea,
Where the whales sing and dive deep,
We chase and rope sharks,
Until it gets dark,
When the waves gently rock us to sleep.
Down under the sea,
My seahorse takes me,
On a ride through coral and caves.
We round up fish there,
Rescue mermaids so fair,
My seahorse and I are quite brave!
(repeat chorus)

Then I let it go again.
Why did I let it go?
Because it bit my finger so.

Five little fishes swimming near the shore,
The red snapper took a bite and then there were four.
Four little fishes swimming in the sea,
The orange roughy swam away and then there were three.
Three little fishes in the ocean blue,
The pink salmon took a seahorse ride and then there were two.
Two little fishes, swimming in the sun,
The yellow perch swam too far and then there was one.
One little blue marlin, now you’re all alone,
I’ll put you in my fish bowl and take you home.

The fourth fish said, “I spy a ship.” (hand shading eyes)
Fishing boat comes, line goes kersplash! (throw in line)
Away the five little fishes dash. (fingers “swim” away quickly)
1. Swim Relays- pretend swimming (fast, slow, backwards, etc.)
When doing the experiment on salt and fresh water listed above, ask the children to predict what will happen. Repeat back to them what they thought would happen and then ask the following follow up questions.
Example-
“You said that all of the water in the jar would turn blue. Was your prediction correct? What happened to the water in the jar? Why do you think that the blue water went to the bottom?” Explain that salt water is heavier than the water with no salt, or ‘fresh water’. Ask them to brainstorm ways to prove this ‘theory’ or idea. Consider using experiments like this one outside. It is a great way of adding concept development, increasing quality of feedback, and facilitating language development on the playground.
Advanced Language- gills
